We waited until the week of my older brother’s birthday to tell my family about our pregnancy. His birthday fell on a weekday in July. And we decided to celebrate his birthday on the weekend that was closest to his birthday. And by then, I had already gone to my 1st OBGYN appointment to confirm the pregnancy.

I volunteered to buy the birthday cake. I asked the bakery to write “Happy Birthday/ I’m pregnant” on the cake. My plan was to prank my family. Ofcourse I had a whole scenerio scripted together in my head. My plan was to open the cake box and call my family over to take a look. I was going to say “look at the big mistake the baker made on the cake when I asked them to write happy birthday” and then just stand back and let them figure it out.

Ofcourse I told Hubby all the details of my brilliant plan prior to it happening so that he can be in on it and take pictures of their reactions when they see the cake.

When we got to the house, my mom and older brother were waiting downstairs. Dad was still upstairs finishing salat, and my little brother was at work at the time.

It was time to start my dramatic performance. My acting was flawless! Ofcourse my older brother figured it out as soon as he saw the cake. He was happy and congratulated both of us. It took my mom a few more minutes to process the situation. But once she finally figured it out, she was thrilled and gave me a hug. My older brother sent a picture of the cake to my little brother, and he was really excited for us as well.

At first when my dad saw the cake, he was furious. Telling us that we should “sue” the bakery for making this mistake. He didn’t catch on to the real message. So we ended up just telling him that it was a prank and that I was actually pregnant. And so he calmed down after that and congratulated both of us with joy. Alhamdulillah.
